How to Update Your Resume for a Job in Nerdom

Blog

Ready to pursue a career in the exciting world of creative and interactive media, cutting-edge technology, or captivating animation? To break into these competitive industries, you need something that will help you stand out from the crowd – and that starts with a killer resume. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just graduated from high school or college, here are three tips for crafting a resume that will grab recruiters' and hiring managers’ attention.

1. Tailor Your Resume to the Industry

Submitting a resume for a creative agency shouldn’t look like one you submit for a tech giant, even if the job titles are the same. That said, if you’re trying to pursue a role that can be found across multiple industries, adjust your resume to fit the field. It’ll show the hiring manager that you have experience specific to that area and will, therefore, require less training time and can more easily adapt to the role.

2. Highlight the Things that Matter

Your resume is the first – and usually only – chance to grab a recruiter's attention, so make it count. The details you include should be relevant to the role you’re applying for. Generally speaking, your resume should have the following:

  • Key skills you possess that are relevant to the role
  • Relevant experience with a focus on your achievements
  • Certifications or licenses that make you qualified for the role or demonstrate your competency in the field
  • Link to a professional LinkedIn profile or digital portfolio that showcases your experience

With the increased use of AI software to screen applications, it’s also worth researching relevant keywords for your desired job title or industry. Organically include those terms throughout your resume to improve your chances of moving on to an interview phase.

3. Use Appropriate Formatting

When you format your resume, you’ll want to ensure it’s best designed for readability. Remember, you’re likely competing against hundreds of applicants for a role, so you’ll want to make it easy for recruiters to see everything you offer in ten to 30 seconds. And because you only have that much time to make a lasting impression, the most important information about your qualifications for a role should be loud and clear. Ensure you:

  • Leverage white space
  • Have clear headings
  • Use bullet points

With a polished and impactful resume, you’re well on your way to turning heads and landing the ultimate dream job. So, get out there and network, showcase what makes you awesome, and get ready to make your mark in the creative and tech landscape!
